Solarwatt GmbH, 01109 Dresden

FAQ
Why is a thermographic inspection of photovoltaic systems important?
Thermography is an indispensable tool for quickly and effectively checking the condition of photovoltaic systems. This technology is particularly helpful when it comes to unexplained performance losses. Thermal imaging technology can be used to quickly identify defective modules and determine the exact cause of problems. Defects in the PV modules increase the electrical resistance locally, which leads to visible heat development and is easily recognisable on a thermal image.
What does the drone solution for inspecting PV systems include?
Our complete solution includes a powerful drone with an integrated thermographic camera, training in safe drone handling and thermographic analysis as well as comprehensive technical support.
Which drone is used for the inspection?
We offer a high-quality drone from the manufacturer DJI that has been specially developed for inspection applications. It is equipped with a high-resolution thermographic camera that enables precise temperature measurements and thus quickly identifies possible defects in solar modules.
How does thermographic inspection of PV systems work?
Thermography uses infrared radiation to measure temperature differences on the PV modules. Damaged modules heat up more and become visible through the thermographic camera as so-called hotspots, indicating possible defects.
Do I need any special prior knowledge to operate the drone?
No, our solution is also suitable for beginners. The training included in the package teaches you everything you need to know about controlling the drone, using the thermography technology and analysing the results.
How long does the training take?
Training for the A2 drone licence, including flight training and examination, takes 2 days at one of our locations in Germany. The prerequisite for this is that you already have an A1/A3 drone licence, which you can easily obtain online from the Federal Aviation Office within 30-60 minutes (costs <50 EUR). The user training for PV thermography is online and on-demand. You should plan around 1/2 to 1 day for this, including application examples.
Can I also use the drone for other inspection purposes?
Yes, the drone is versatile and can also be used for other inspection and detection tasks. Typical examples are thermography on buildings, fawn rescue or the inspection of hard-to-reach systems with a visual and infrared camera.
How often should a PV system be inspected?
It is recommended to inspect PV systems at least once a year in order to recognise potential damage at an early stage and maintain the efficiency of the modules.
What are the advantages of thermographic inspections by drone compared to conventional methods?
Thermographic inspections by drone are faster, more efficient and safer than conventional manual inspections. No scaffolding or climbing equipment is required and even areas that are difficult to access can be reached effortlessly. Thermography also delivers precise and reliable results.
How do I get the inspection results?
The drone records both visual and thermographic data, which can then be analysed in detail. With our training, you can use this to create a complete inspection report including high-resolution images and temperature data.
What are the technical specifications of the infrared camera?
- Frame rate: 30 Hz
- Noise equivalent temperature difference (NETD): ≤50 mK@F1.0>
- Infrared temperature measurement accuracy: +- 2°C or +-2% (when using a larger value)
- Image format: JPEG (8 bit), R-JPEG (16 bit)
Two 12 MP view cameras are also installed.
What support does the technical and thermographic support offer?
Our support team will help you set up and configure the drone and analyse the thermographic data.
