What is allowed in the OPEN category - and what is not?
The open category was introduced with the
- maximum flight altitude of 120 metres above ground
- Drones with a take-off weight of up to 900 g may fly directly towards uninvolved people
(small EU drone licence required!) - Drones up to 4 kg take-off weight in slow flight mode up to 5 m from uninvolved people, otherwise 30 m
(large EU drone licence required!) - Drones up to 25 kg take-off weight up to 150 m from uninvolved people (
small EU drone licence required!)
The following is NOT permitted and therefore falls into the specific category requiring a licence (SPECIFIC category):
- Flight beyond visual range
- Flight over 120 metres above ground
- Flight in the vicinity of an airport, industrial plant, motorway or main road (= examples of no-fly zones)
- Flight that jeopardises the privacy of uninvolved people
- Flight with drone take-off weight over 25kg
